WASHINGTON, Sept. 6, 2013 – FDA released new data today indicating there is little arsenic in rice products sold in the U.S. market.  Average levels of inorganic arsenic ranged from 2.6 to 7.2 micrograms of per serving, which is “not high enough to cause any immediate or short-term adverse health effects,” according to an agency statement.

Arsenic can occur naturally or as a pollutant resulting from human activity. It is found in water, soil and air.

The FDA study, which began in September 2012, tested and analyzed more than 1,300 rice samples, including different types of grain rice and processed rice products. Products tested included pasta, snacks (like rice cakes) and beer.

The agency says it will continue with its risk assessment process to determine whether the low arsenic levels lead to varying health effects in different segments of the population. A forthcoming assessment report will determine whether FDA takes any further action.
