WASHINGTON, June 28, 2013 - USDA will collect additional data in July to better determine soybean acreage in the U.S. after June surveys had high amounts of unplanted acres.

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will collect updated information on 2013 acres planted to soybeans in fourteen states.

NASS previously collected planted acreage information during the first two weeks of June, with the results published in the June 28 Acreage report. At the time of the survey, a large percentage of acres remained to be planted in fourteen states: Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. To better assess planted acreage, NASS will resurvey the growers in these states in July.

Heavy rains during the planting seasons in a variety of states prevented many acres from being planted, and NASS hopes to get a better grasp on late planting numbers through the additional July surveying.

If the newly collected data justifies any changes, NASS will publish updated estimates in the Crop Production report, to be released at noon EDT on Monday, August 12. It will be available online at www.nass.usda.gov.
