Percentage of American Households that were food insecure by year; 2019-2023



USDA data shows food insecurity in the United States is rising.

Food insecurity is when a household cannot get enough food due to a lack of money or other resources.

This chart shows the percentage of households across the country experiencing food insecurity from 2019 to 2023.

You can see the numbers were roughly around 10 percent from 2019 to 2021 but then, they began to climb.

12-point eight percent of households were food insecure in 2022 that went up to 13 and a half percent in 2023, which means nearly 18 million households experienced food insecurity at some point during the year.

Several different groups had higher food insecurity in 2023 compared to 2022 including households without kids, households with more than one adult, and households in both metropolitan and suburban areas.
