The Agriculture Department is delaying until March 21 a final rule amending organic regulations for mushrooms and pet food to comply with the freeze on new regulations issued late last month by President Donald Trump.

The agency published the final rule in December to create specific organic standards for mushroom production and pet food handling, amid previous “uncertainty and inconsistency in how the organic regulations apply to these two products,” according to the rule.

"The temporary delay in effective date is necessary to give department officials the opportunity for further review and consideration of new regulations, consistent with the President's memorandum of Jan. 20, 2025,” Agricultural Marketing Service Associate Administrator Erin Morris said in a Feb. 10 Federal Register notice.

While organic operations previously were required to comply with the rule by Feb. 22, 2027, that date has been moved to March 22, 2027.
