The U.S. needs a national food strategy that incorporates oversight authorities from the Food and Drug Administration and USDA to better protect the domestic food supply, a former FDA official said Friday.

FDA's last installment of its FSMA regulations includes enhanced recordkeeping requirements for certain foods, which is supposed to enable faster identification and rapid removal of potentially contaminated food from the market and ultimately reduce foodborne illnesses and deaths.
The Food and Drug Administration plans to extend the compliance deadline for pre-harvest water testing requirements for produce other than sprouts, the agency said in a proposal that also extends the comment period on proposed changes to those requirements.
To comply with section 204 of the massive Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been working on rulemaking for the traceability of produce including fruits, vegetables, herbs and nut butters.
The Food and Drug Administration is proposing to have growers of leafy greens and other fruits and vegetables conduct “comprehensive assessments” of pre-harvest agricultural water, replacing the current requirement in FDA's 2015 Produce Safety Rule for microbial water quality testing.
