USDA proposes to deregulate Dow’s insect-resistant soybean

WASHINGTON, March 3, 2014-- USDA published a preliminary decision today that a soybean genetically engineered for insect resistance by Dow AgroSciences should be nonregulated.

USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) prepared a Plant Pest Risk Assessment, environmental assessment, and preliminary “finding of no significant impact” for public review.

The soybean product is resistant to certain lepidopteran pests and the herbicide glufosinate. The petition states that this soybean is unlikely to pose a plant pest risk and, therefore, should not be a regulated article under APHIS' regulations.

APHIS will consider any comments it receives on or before April 2.
