USDA opens Monsanto’s SmartStax Pro corn for public comment

WASHINGTON, March, 7, 2014-- USDA today posted Monsanto’s petition for its SmartStax Pro product, which is corn genetically engineered for protection against corn rootworm and resistance to the herbicide glyphosate.

USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) made the petition available today in the Federal Register and open for public comment for 60 days. APHIS will consider comments received on or before due May 6. Monsanto submitted the petition in October.

In November 2011, APHIS announced it would begin improving the overall timeline for biotechnology approvals by standardizing its process. APHIS published the official notice of the improved process in the Federal Register in March of 2012.
