AWEA honors Global Wind Day

Washington, June 15 – In honor of Global Wind Day today, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) announced several Global Wind Day initiatives, including “Five Wind Facts,” which identifies the benefits of wind energy in America.
“Global Wind Day is a great opportunity to underscore that wind works because it is vital to our nation’s economic, energy, and environmental security,” said American Wind Energy CEO Denise Bode. “With our ‘Five Wind Facts,’ we hope to encourage more citizens to get involved in the campaign to increase America’s use of wind energy, and to call on Congress to pass a strong national Renewable Electricity Standard as part of energy and climate legislation.”
The wind industry currently employs 85,000 people, including 18,500 in the manufacturing sector alone. A study by Navigant Consulting determined that 247,000 renewable energy jobs would be created from 25% renewable electricity standard (RES) additional jobs would be created if such a policy was in place.
AWEA says wind as a reliable generation source. According to a study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) earlier this year found that there are no fundamental technical barriers to reaching 30% wind in the Eastern Interconnection, which comprises 70% of the U.S. population.
Additionally, the AWEA is hosting a series of events to further promote Global Wind Day. Such activities include a roundtable discussion at Manufacturer Cardinal Fastener headquarters in Bedford Heights, Ohio and a second annual “Chirps to Tweets” Tweet-Up at the Blue Shirt Café in Davis Square, MA.
