The Supreme Court has ruled 7-2 to stay a district court order that required the Trump administration to rehire about 16,000 probationary employees at six agencies, including USDA, which already is subject to other orders requiring it to rehire employees.

A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to rehire probationary employees at six federal agencies, including USDA.

The Agriculture Department says it will pay probationary employees fired last month back pay and work on a “phased plan” for their return to the office.

USDA probationary employees who were abruptly fired from their jobs last month have gotten a temporary reprieve. The chair of the Merit Systems Protection Board ordered that they be reinstated in their jobs for 45 days while the case against the department is stayed.

A federal appeals board has ordered nearly 6,000 USDA employees back to work after they were fired during their probationary periods last month.
