Nutrien has tapped Mayo Schmidt as the new president and chief executive officer of the company and Russ Girling as the new chair of the board of directors, effective immediately.

The leadership changes come after Chuck Magro announced he will be stepping down from his management and board role to pursue new opportunities. According to a company release, he will stay available to Nutrien until May 16 to help facilitate a smooth transition.

Schmidt brings over 30 years of ag business experience. He previously served as president and chief executive officer of Viterra Inc., a Canadian agribusiness company. He also served as chair of Nutrien’s board of directors, a position he has held since May 2019. Since 2012, he has served on Agrium’s board of directors. Earlier in his career, Schmidt held senior leadership positions with ConAgra Grain, Canada and General Mills, Inc.

Girling comes to the Canadian fertilizer company after serving as president and CEO of TransCanada Pipelines Limited and TC Energy Corporation, a North American energy infrastructure company.

The new slate of officers will stand for election at Nutrien’s annual meeting of shareholders scheduled for May 17.
