President Joe Biden issued an executive order on Monday that set new safety and security standards for artificial intelligence technologies.
 
Developers must now share with federal agencies the results of any safety tests for training AI systems. The National Institute of Standards and Technology will set rigorous new standards to ensure systems are safe and trustworthy. And federal agencies will develop guidance to prevent fraud and deception. Biden also called on Congress to pass legislation to strengthen privacy protections.
 
Governor Gavin Newsom, who has actively engaged with legislators on AI, lauded the order and said he has been closely working with the Biden administration on the issue. Last month Newsom signed his own executive order to ensure emerging AI models are ethical, transparent and trustworthy.

Despite excitement over the past year with the emergence of ChatGPT, trust remains a significant hurdle for growers considering AI products for data analysis.
 
At the FIRA USA conference on robotics and automation last month, Andrew Wulf, senior director of strawberry product leadership at Driscoll’s, lamented that the trust “is not there yet.” But he was hopeful the growers who lead as early adopters can prove the concept and bring more farmers on board.
