The Imperial Irrigation District is getting another $7 million from the Interior Department to build what will be the largest reservoir in the district’s 113-year history.

The funding from the bipartisan infrastructure law enacted in 2021 is intended to increase water supply reliability in the Imperial Valley. The department had previously given the district a $9.5 million grant for the Upstream Operational Reservoir Project.

The district is still working on design, engineering and inlet structure locations for the project. The new reservoir will hold 2,100 acre-feet of water, “with a goal of accommodating short water orders downstream in the eastern Imperial Valley,” according to a district release.

“We all have been working very hard for a long time to maximize water management efficiency in the Imperial Valley and this will help us do that on a large scale,” said IID Board President Alex Cardenas. “These funds will help us get one step closer to getting this very important project completed.”
