WASHINGTON, May 20, 2013 – Topping this week’s action, debate on the Senate version of the farm bill (S.954) is set to begin today on the floor with stakeholders closely watching the anticipated battles over nutrition funding, dairy policy, and crop insurance.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (R-Nev.) said he will bring up the five-year bill today to begin what will likely be a multiple week process. The Senate will be in recess during the week of May 27.
This comes after the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee approved the bill on May 14 with a 15-5 vote. The House Agriculture Committee, for its part, approved a largely different farm policy package on May 15 with a 36-10 vote.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled today to continue its markup of a comprehensive immigration reform bill that contains several changes to the farm worker visa program. There has been speculation that the Senate may turn from the farm bill in favor of considering the immigration bill.
In addition, the House is scheduled to vote on legislation (H.R. 3) that would declare a presidential permit shall not be required for construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.
Further, this week, the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee will hold nomination hearings for Penny Pritzker to serve as commerce secretary and Anthony Foxx to serve as transportation secretary.
Monday, May 20.
