WASHINGTON, June 6, 2013- Several dozen agricultural organizations met with House lawmakers today to discuss the whip count for the upcoming farm bill, HR 1947, which is expected to reach the House floor this month.

According to sources who attended the meeting, Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy; Calif., and Republican Reps. Kristi Noem; S.D., Mike Conaway; Texas, Reid Ribble; Wisc., and Rodney Davis; Ill., shared their perspectives on gaining votes for the farm bill in the House as part of the whip team. Lawmakers will begin a whip count in the House starting Wednesday of next week.

They also noted the House Agriculture Committee is circulating a document among members outlining reasons to support the farm bill.

Among those reasons are that it reduces spending by $20.5 billion to food stamps, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and without the bill’s passage, no budget savings will be achieved beyond sequestration.
