GREELEY, Colo., Aug. 29, 2013 – Chicken producer Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation announced Wednesday a $25 million investment in Alabama to build a feed mill facility and to renovate a poultry processing facility.

“We are excited to announce our continued commitment…local family farmers, our customers and the Pilgrim’s team members who work hard every day to make our business a success,” said Jayson Penn, Pilgrim’s executive vice president of sales and operations. “This significant investment is consistent with our strategy of relentless pursuit of operational excellence and will improve our efficiencies, cost structure and competitiveness, while creating a safer work environment for our employees.”

Pilgrim’s announcement comes shortly after rival chicken producer Sanderson Farms, Inc. Tuesday reported a nearly double net income for the first nine months of fiscal year 2013 compared to the same period a year ago.

Pilgrim’s said it will begin construction of the $15 million feed mill within the next 30 days and the $10 million renovation of an existing processing facility during the next six months.

The new feed mill will replace an existing feed mill and will employ more than 25 people. The two-shift poultry processing facility, set for renovation, employs more than 700 people, processes more than 1 million birds per week providing products to food service and restaurant chains in the United States.
