Washington, Jan. 9 – Responding to the apparent attempt to assassinate Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffrords (D-AZ) and the murder of a nine-year-old girl, a congressional staffer, a federal judge and three others, President Obama called on Americans “to observe a moment of silence” at 11 AM Monday “to honor the innocent victims of the senseless tragedy in Tucson, Arizona, including those still fighting for their lives.” The President will observe the moment of silence with White House staff on the South Lawn.

Also Sunday, Obama signed a presidential proclamation ordering U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset Jan. 14 “at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels” in the U.S. and “at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.”
