Dairy Farmers of America, the largest milk marketing cooperative, made the first purchase of verified carbon credits within the livestock value chain from one of its Texas dairy farmer owners and represents the first transaction of the carbon insetting marketplace.  

The Agriculture Department could help drive more participation in voluntary carbon markets through technical assistance and outreach, according to a report released by the agency on Monday.

An exclusive dialogue, presented by the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) and Agri-Pulse, will bring together industry, government and non-profit organizations to discuss solutions that can accelerate progress across the livestock value chain, including the development of the first-of-its-kind livestock carbon credit marketplace. The event, “New horizons for the agricultural carbon market,” will take place in Washington, D.C., and virtually on Sept. 13 from 9:30-12 p.m. ET.

Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Rostin Behnam said his agency would continue to work to maintain the integrity of voluntary carbon markets within the authority granted to the CFTC, but also warned of the potential for fraud as those markets develop.
