GOP Rep. Dan Newhouse, a six-term House member from Washington state and a farmer who has been a leading voice on issues around ag labor, environmental regulation, and foreign land ownership, announced Wednesday that he won’t seek re-election in 2026.

USDA first learned about delays in deliveries to tribal, senior food assistance programs in May, but senior staff, including Secretary Tom Vilsack were not informed until late July, he told lawmakers Wednesday. 

Spending for USDA and FDA would be increased by 3% in fiscal 2025 under a bill advanced by the Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday, drawing a sharp contrast with the House GOP version of the measure.

House Republicans step up their latest effort to cut domestic, non-defense programs this week as they release the fiscal 2024 spending bill to fund the Agriculture Department and Food and Drug Administration.

The fiscal 2024 spending bill for USDA, FDA and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission failed 191-237 after 27 Republicans joined Democrats in opposing it.
