A bill advanced by House lawmakers last week to reauthorize a slate of surface transportation programs for five years is generally receiving praise from farm groups and shipping organizations, though trucking weight limits and rail safety measures remain points of contention.

Lock and dam construction and upkeep projects could see additional federal funding under a bill that is nearing passage after a recent deal between House and Senate transportation leaders.
