The cost of eating at home surged 0.6% in August as beef prices continued to climb, and consumers had to pay more for produce, including tomatoes, apples and lettuce. A food industry official said tariff exemptions on some imported foods could provide consumers some relief.

Shoppers saw relief at the supermarket in February, as the overall cost of groceries remained flat as lower prices for pork, dairy products and fruits and vegetables offset the spike in egg prices and higher prices for beef.

Poultry farms in California, Utah, Oklahoma, Tennessee and much of the Midwest are seeing a resurgence of highly pathogenic avian influenza cases, sending egg prices upward in the holiday season. 

The cost of groceries rose 0.1% for the second month in a row in July, led by increases in the cost of beef, eggs, milk and fresh produce. Consumers continue to see significantly more inflation when they're eating out.

The cost of eating at home was unchanged for the second straight month in March as lower prices for dairy and grain products offset higher costs for beef, pork, chicken and eggs.

Supermarket prices ticked up 0.3% last month, driven by a jump in the cost of beef as well as increases for some fruits, vegetables and dairy products, according to the monthly Consumer Price Index.
