FDA's newly appointed deputy commissioner for human foods says a proposed reorganization of the agency should correct longstanding structural flaws exposed by last year's infant formula crisis. 

The infant formula crisis was a “preventable tragedy,” and the Food and Drug Administration’s proposed reorganizational changes fall short of the needed overhaul to improve FDA’s ability to prevent and respond to food safety concerns, Frank Yiannas, former FDA deputy commissioner in the Office of Food Policy and Response, detailed during a hearing before the House Oversight Committee.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will testify before congressional committees over three straight days this week, and FDA Commissioner Robert Califf also will face lawmakers, who are certain to have questions about his ongoing reorganization of the agency’s human foods program.
