On the first of weekly visits across the U.S. ahead of the midterms, President Donald Trump used his speech in the nation’s top corn, pork, and ethanol-producing state to tout the benefits of his trade policies and express support for year-round E15, including a commitment to sign the provision into law if it reaches his desk. 

President Donald Trump kicks off a series of weekly campaign trips across the U.S. with a visit to Iowa even as the ethanol industry and corn producers are angry about the failure of an E15 provision to move in Congress. In Washington, Trump faces the prospect of another partial government shutdown after a second fatal shooting in Minneapolis involving immigration agents.

Ethanol industry backers expressed outrage Thursday after House leadership decided to create a study council for biofuel issues rather than including a year-round E15 provision in a fiscal 2026 spending package.

The Agriculture Department announced a slate of new political appointments, including many names familiar to the food and agriculture community: Trey Forsyth, Kelsey Barnes, Bill Beam and Tucker Stewart, among others. 

The National Corn Growers Association hired Gretchen Kuck as an economist. John Stewart was promoted to senior adviser of government affairs at Elanco. Mark Sanborn joined the Environmental Protection Agency as a regional administrator in Boston. 

The 2024 election is six days away. Several House districts that are represented by Ag Committee members or have significant agricultural production could be key to determining control of the chamber.

A handful of lawmakers who represent agricultural districts are locked in tight re-election races that determine control of the House next year. They include Iowa’s 3^rd District, held by first-term GOP Rep. Zach Nunn, who’s being challenged by a former USDA appointee with the backing of Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack.

House Republican leaders on Wednesday narrowly won approval for their bill to raise the debt ceiling while also slashing federal spending and expanding SNAP work requirements. 

The leader of the Environmental Protection Agency made a pitch for additional resources to bring safer and more effective pesticides to market, and defended his agency from criticism on a wide range of issues, in an appearance before the House Agriculture Committee Wednesday.
