Biden budget would revive cover crop payments, boost ag research

President Joe Biden proposed a fiscal 2024 budget Thursday that would make permanent a lapsed USDA subsidy program for cover crops while also increasing the number of kids who get free school meals.

This week's Open Mic guest is Duane Simpson, President and CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives. The group held their annual fly-in last week and lobbied congressional leaders to complete a new farm bill and pass ag labor reform legislation, among other issues. Simpson says farmers are stressed with high input costs and low commodity prices threatening the survival of many operations nationwide.
