Some 129,000 acres of solar power production was grazed by more than 113,000 sheep last year, according to a survey commissioned by the American Solar Grazing Association.
The South exceeded the Midwest, Northeast and West in both the number of sheep and the solar acreage grazed, the association said. The sheep grazing involved 500 solar power sites.

“Sheep grazing was commonly utilized on utility-scale solar sites and smaller community and distributed generation facilities, as well as fixed and tracking style solar arrays,” the association said in a summary.
The survey was based on 127 respondents, 65 of which were grazing solar farms for themselves or on behalf of their businesses. About 18 to 26 gigawatts of power production was grazed in 2024, according to the survey. One-third of survey respondents were women.
