The Rainforest Alliance has created a new Regenerative Agriculture Standard for coffee — a certification program to promote sustainable livelihoods for farmers and companies and to restore tropical ecosystems.

Disruption in yields, supply reliability and commodity markets caused by extreme weather threatens millions of coffee farmers around the world. It’s crucial to start serving coffee that “gives back more than it takes from the land,” said Rainforest Alliance CEO Santiago Gowland.

The standard is built on regenerative agriculture principles, which focus on climate-conscious practices and seek to restore natural properties and improve livelihoods.

Farmers are measured on five areas: soil health and fertility, climate resilience, biodiversity, water stewardship and livelihoods. By meeting program standards, farmers create more sustainable practices, earn certification to expand their marketing, and are allowed to use the Rainforest Alliance regenerative seal on their products.

Certified regenerative coffee products sporting the Rainforest Alliance’s new seal are expected to be available at retail stores early next year.
