Newsom signs first-in-nation ban on ultraprocessed foods in schools

California became the first state to ban ultra-processed foods in school meals after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 1264 into law. A state agency will have to establish scientific criteria to define “ultra-processed foods of concern” by June 1, 2028.
