WASHINGTON, Jan. 24, 2013- The California Department of Food and Agriculture agreed to amend the pricing formulas for milk after several months of pressure from state dairy producers. Although the California Dairy Campaign asked the department during a hearing in December to raise prices by a full $1 per hundredweight, the formulas approved this week will increase the average price about 25 cents per 100 pounds of milk.
Prices for class 4a and 4b milk, used to make cheese and whey, will rise 30 cents. Class 2 and 3 milk, often used for yogurt and cheese, will rise 10 cents and prices for Class 1 milk, or fluid milk, will rise 5 cents per hundredweight.
The price formulas are amended for the Feb. 1, 2013 to May 31, 2013 period.
