WASHINGTON, Jan. 7, 2015 – Former U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns has been elected to serve on the board of directors of agricultural equipment giant Deere & Co.

Johanns also served as the Republican governor of Nebraska from 1999 to 2005 and U.S. Agriculture Secretary from 2005 to 2007. In 2013, he announced he would not run for re-election after completing his six year Senate term.

“Mike’s wide range of expertise in the areas of agriculture, banking, commerce, foreign trade, law and governance will be valuable assets for the Deere & Co. board,” Deere’s Chairman and CEO Samuel R. Allen said in a news release.

With Johanns’ election, Deere’s board totals 12 members, 11 of whom are independent directors.
