CALIFORNIA, August 30, 2017 - Audi and Alta Devices have partnered to integrate solar cells into a panoramic glass roof in the automobile manufacturer’s models. Audi hopes the technology will extend the range of their electric vehicles. A subsidiary of Hanergy Thin Film Power, Alta’s technology is uniquely flexible, thin and efficient, enabling the roof surface to be covered with solar cells. The first prototype, to be developed by the end of 2017, will derive power for air-conditioning and seat heaters from solar-generated electricity. “The range of electric cars plays a decisive role for our customers. Together with Alta Devices and Hanergy, we plan to install innovative solar technology in our electric cars that will extend their range and is also sustainable,” stated Audi Board of Management Member for Procurement, Bernd Martens.  Developers hope solar energy will directly charge the traction battery in the future.
