Organic groups are urging USDA to maintain its organic animal‑welfare requirements as the agency considers requests for regulatory review. 

The organic industry is grappling with fast sales growth, driven by consumers across the political spectrum, that has outpaced U.S. production and is looking for help from Congress in boosting domestic supplies of feed, meat and other products that have to be imported.

Sales of certified organic products grew 5.2% last year to $65.4 billion, the largest increase since a pandemic-driven spike in 2020, according to the Organic Trade Association's annual market report. By comparison, total grocery sales increased 2.5% last year.

Lesly Weber McNitt returned to the National Corn Growers Association this week as vice president of public policy, leading the Washington office and serving as the chief advocate. She worked at NCGA from 2017 to 2021 managing NCGA trade and biotech portfolios. McNitt earlier was senior professional staff member on the House Ag Committee, chief of staff at USDA Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services and most recently a leader at the global malnutrition philanthropy Eleanor Crooke Foundation.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is set today for the second of his two confirmation hearings. This time he’ll be before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Its jurisdiction includes the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates 80% of the food supply.
