Small and mid-sized farmers could reap $5.6 billion in additional revenue a year if Food is Medicine programs were large enough to reach all the Americans who need them, a new report from the Rockefeller Foundation says.

Food Is Medicine is having a moment as back-to-back U.S. administrations have pushed for much more nutrition-based health care throughout the system. But funding cuts to key programs like Medicaid and SNAP are introducing division into an otherwise rare example of policy compatibility between Republicans and Democrats. 

State agriculture departments have picked five issues to focus on in 2025, including the passage of a new farm bill and strengthening food systems.

Some groups and state agriculture leaders are beginning to rethink food as medicine programs to better connect local agricultural systems with nutrition.
