School nutrition advocates are concerned that the substantial cuts to SNAP passed in the Republicans’ “One Big Beautiful Bill” could lead to schools losing eligibility or getting less reimbursement for free meals. 

Last-minute changes to the Senate’s reconciliation bill would give states with the highest SNAP error rates two additional years before they have to pitch in on the program’s cost. But even scaled back from the House version, and with the new timeline, anti-hunger groups warn the policy shift will be disastrous for states and SNAP participants. 

The national error rate for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program fell slightly from 2023, but remained higher than pre-pandemic levels. 

The Senate Agriculture Committee developed a reconciliation plan similar to the House version passed last month, but with a scaled-back state cost-share for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and less restrictive work requirements for parents of school-age kids. 

Counties that include about one-third of all SNAP recipients in the country are warning that proposed cuts to the feeding program would hinder their ability to reduce food insecurity.
