“We’ve been Midwest nice for too long.” That was the E15 rallying cry of Ohio corn farmer Jed Bower at last week’s Commodity Classic. It also was one of the biggest applause lines — if not the biggest – during the ag gathering of more than 12,000 attendees in San Antonio.  The message is a salvo to lawmakers in Washington stuck on how to tackle legislation that would allow year-round, nationwide sales of higher ethanol blends, known as E15.  

 On the first day of a three-day public hearing, ag industry representatives described how, for some commodities, the deal has been a boon to U.S. ag exports, while others face existential threats from rising Mexican imports.

As the U.S. careens towards a new trade pact with China, ag groups warn that Beijing never followed through with many of its ag policy commitments under a 2020 deal. Groups are split, however, on how to proceed.

Lindsay Tello joined the Almond Board of California as senior adviser for trade policy based in Washington. The Public Policy Institute of California added former Ag Secretary Ann Veneman to the group’s board of directors. The Western Canal Water District hired Jenny Scheer as general manager. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., hired Emilio Contreras as a senior legislative assistant covering agriculture issues. 

SNAC International hired Matt Grill as vice president of advocacy. Ohio corn and soybean farmer Jed Bower begins his tenure as president of the National Corn Growers Association today, Oct. 1. Farmers National Company promoted Grant Fitzgerald to senior vice president of farm and ranch management. Former Housing and Urban Development secretary Ben Carson was named a national nutrition, health and housing adviser at the Agriculture Department.
