Eight companies have signed a set of Guiding Principles on reducing methane emissions across the natural gas value chain. BP, ExxonMobil, Total, Shell, Statoil, ENI and Wintershall made the pledge, which aims to continually reduce methane emissions; advance strong performance across gas value chains; improve accuracy of methane emissions data; advocate sound policies and regulations on methane emissions; and increase transparency. The principles reinforce other initiatives, including the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s Oil & Gas Methane Partnership. Following the Guiding Principles, ExxonMobil subsidiary XTO Energy will phase out high-bleed pneumatic devices and conduct research on new leak detection technologies.
