Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Jobs First Council have unveiled an $80 million investment to support eleven projects across seven economic regions in eighteen counties — yielding a projected 23,000 jobs. The money will boost several agricultural initiatives.

“California feeds the nation, but our agricultural leadership isn't guaranteed,” said Karen Ross, secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, in a statement accompanying the announcement. “Other states and countries are investing heavily in agricultural technology. This initiative ensures California doesn't just keep up but defines the future of farming globally.”

The funding includes a $15 million grant to University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources — the largest single award under the initiative — to build a statewide agricultural innovation network. UC ANR Chief Innovation Officer Gabriel Youtsey said the award “allows us to do something California has never done before: build a single, statewide engine for agricultural innovation.”

The initiative connects research, entrepreneurs, farmworkers and industry across major farming regions, deploying $2 million in innovation grants, facilitating startup–investor connections and providing commercialization and regulatory support for rapid tech adoption.

Other agriculture allocations include $9 million to the Community Foundation of Merced County for smart farms in R&D, workforce development and ag startups; $3 million to expand agtech certificates via state community colleges; and $1 million to Chico State for sustainable irrigation and fencing innovations.

Beyond agriculture, the initiative steers $24 million to life sciences in Los Angeles County, $17 million toward aerospace and defense on the Central Coast, and $10 million for bioeconomy infrastructure in the North San Joaquin Valley — highlighting BEAM Circular's role in waste-to-value manufacturing. A second funding round of $45 million is anticipated in October.
