U.S. hog and pig inventory totaled 74.5 million head as of Sept. 1, down 1% from the previous year, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Of the total, 68.5 million were market hogs, and the remaining 5.93 million were kept for breeding, NASS reported.
Iowa continues to lead the nation in hog production with 25.1 million head. Minnesota ranks second with 8.75 million, followed by North Carolina with 7.8 million.

The report also notes a 3% drop in the number of pigs weaned between June and August 2025, compared to the same period last year. During this time, producers weaned an average of 11.82 pigs per litter.
Despite the annual decrease, the report shows inventory up by 1% from the previous quarter that ended June 1.
Looking ahead, U.S. hog producers hope to farrow 2.86 million sows between September and November, and another 2.82 million between December and February.
