Mad Agriculture, a nonprofit organization that supports regenerative agriculture, has reached its $1 million fundraising goal to launch a new biodiversity initiative, the Wilding Pilot.
The Wilding Pilot is a three-year initiative to restore more than 1,000 acres of marginal cropland in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area into native ecosystems. The program will use regenerative practices, including planting prairie and adding rotational grazing, to support healthy soil, pollinators, clean water and wildlife.

Funding for the initiative comes through a collaboration with Whole Foods Markets, which matched the initial $500,000 raised. Mad Agriculture achieved the first half of its goal with support from 20 companies, including Bob’s Red Mill, KIND, Oatly, OLIPOP, Campbell’s, and UNFI.
“This could be the beginning of America’s next great infrastructure project, built through collaboration with those who work the land and care for its future,” said Omar de Kok-Mercado, director of Wilding at Mad Agriculture. The organization hopes to expand the pilot to include 20% of all U.S. cropland.
