Large-scale family farms, which have more than $1 million in annual gross cash farm income, account for 50% of U.S. agricultural production and 33% of the acres, according to 2024 data released by USDA.
USDA’s report is based on the latest data from the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS).
Large-scale family farms make up only 5% of all U.S. farms based on USDA’s definition of a farm as having at least $1,000 in sales a year.
In 2024, small family farms, which have gross farm income of less than $350,000 a year, operated 40% of the nation’s land and accounted for 86% of all farms but only 17% of total production.
Midsize farms, which have gross incomes between $350,000 and $1 million a year, made up 6% of farms in 2024 and accounted for 18% of production. They operated 18% of U.S. land.
