USDA is seeking feedback on requests by Corteva and Syngenta to deregulate new variations of genetically engineered corn meant to resist damage from certain moths and caterpillars.
Three petitions involve corn developed to fight off lepidopteran pests, like farm armyworm. Two of the varieties also include herbicide resistance, USDA said in a statement Tuesday.
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is also asking for public input on Bayer's petition to deregulate a genetically engineered soybean resistant to damage caused by lepidopterans, such as velvetbean caterpillars.
The 60-day comment period for the corn and soybean requests run through April 20.
