The Agriculture Department is launching a $400 million effort with 18 irrigation districts to pay Western farmers to cut back on water use, so long as they promise to keep farming.
The Interior Department announced Wednesday its plans to funnel part of the $4 billion in drought funding it received through the Inflation Reduction Act into a program that would pay Lower Colorado Basin water users to leave portions of their water deliveries in Lake Mead.
Competition for irrigation water is heating up across the West and Plains states and the battles are expected to become more intense in coming years. With that in mind, Nebraska is taking a proactive approach to ensure access to water when it’s needed, even at the risk of starting a dispute with its neighbors in Colorado.
