USDA announced an $80 million investment in Forest Service wood innovation grants supporting forest management, wood manufacturing and energy developments across the country.

These grants, which began in 2015, support the National Forest System and focus on production of mass timber, renewable energy, and innovations in sustainability and fuel reduction.

“We’re investing in innovation that ensures a steady, sustainable supply of American wood that not only supports jobs and fuels economies, it protects the people and communities we serve, as well as the forest resources they depend on to survive and thrive,” said USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins.

The grants reflect the Trump administration’s goal to reduce “unnecessary barriers” that cause American forests to be “overstocked and unhealthy” and more at risk of wildfires, according to the USDA press release. This announcement also comes on the heels of USDA’s commitment in May of $23 million in grants related to transportation of hazardous fuels such as fallen trees.
