The cost of groceries rose 0.3% for the second month in a row and is up 2.4% from a year ago. The index for beef rose 2% after declining slightly in May and is up 10.6% from a year ago.

Cattle imported from Mexico have become a significant part of the U.S. beef supply, raising the stakes for the Trump administration’s battle against an outbreak of New World screwworm at a time when U.S. cattle production is in a down cycle. Consumers are feeling the pinch of higher beef prices due to the reduction in cattle supplies, while ranches and feedlots in the southwestern United States that rely on Mexican cattle for their normal operations also are being hurt.

Shoppers saw relief at the supermarket in February, as the overall cost of groceries remained flat as lower prices for pork, dairy products and fruits and vegetables offset the spike in egg prices and higher prices for beef.

Cattle producers are enjoying record prices for steers as they start the year. 

Supermarket prices rose 0.1% in September as the increased cost of beef, pork and milk masked price declines in many other products. It was the smallest increase in the cost of eating at home since June.

Supermarket prices were flat in June, as the falling cost of dairy products helped offset some increases in beef and chicken prices.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s index of global food commodity prices rose for the first time in a year last month, led by increases in the cost of sugar and meat. 

Cattle producers should be in line for a profitable year in 2023, but consumers will see higher prices at the grocery store as a result of an expected drop in production.

Grocery prices rose 0.2% in December, driven in part by another spike in the cost of eggs and an increase in beef prices that helped offset declines in many other categories.
