The Senate will start moving its fiscal 2026 spending bills, including the Agriculture bill that funds USDA and FDA. The ag bill won’t attempt to move Food for Peace to USDA, as originally proposed in the House. But you can expect report language calling for an evaluation to determine the best home for the program once housed at USAID.

With farmers across the country concerned about losing workers to mass deportations, there are renewed calls for reforming the H-2A visa system. To that end, House Agriculture Committee Chair Glenn “GT” Thompson, R-Pa., tells Agri-Pulse he plans to introduce legislation that would put into law recommendations made by a committee task force in the last Congress.

House Ag leaders debate farm bill, possible SNAP cuts

Craig says last year's bill was skewed to southern crops

House Agriculture  Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson indicated Monday he wants to limit cuts to SNAP that Republicans will try to make through the budget reconciliation process. But the panel’s new top Democrat, Rep. Angie Craig, questioned whether he can hold the line and warned that a deep reduction could ultimately doom a new farm bill. She also said the committee's farm bill last year was skewed to benefit southern farmers.
