Federal agencies will begin meeting formally to discuss the best way to evaluate the effects of pesticides on endangered species, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt said at the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture Winter Policy Conference Wednesday.

House passage of pesticide bill welcome, but funding is a concern

WASHINGTON, Mar. 22, 2017 - The crop protection industry is applauding the House of Representatives’ passage Tuesday of a bill assessing fees on pesticide registration requests to help fund the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Pesticide Programs.

This week’s Open Mic guest is Chef José Andrés. The world-renowned, chef, author and humanitarian believes the power of food can change the world. Andrés recently announced a partnership with George Washington University to build a Global Food Institute to lead the world in food system delivery. Andrés says providing humanitarian food assistance may alleviate an immediate need for hungry nations or those experiencing tragedy, but a long-term investment is needed to support local farms and food systems. Andrés believes in a central government strategy focused on food to change people’s lives and the health of the planet

The House Agriculture Committee stepped up its farm bill work this week with a lengthy hearing on the bill’s nutrition title and the end of a timeline for members of Congress to submit their priorities for consideration in the legislation. Committee member and Kansas Republican Tracey Mann joins Agri-Pulse Newsmakers to offer his thoughts on how lawmakers will sort through the long list of issues in the bill and what will be at the top of his agenda.

Then, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program policy experts Angela Rachidi of the American Enterprise Institute and Ellen Vollinger with the Food Research & Action Center offer their thoughts on the nutrition title hearing as well as where the issue stands headed into the farm bill after the changes made in the debt ceiling bill.
